What does the term “self-image” mean?
Self-image is typically thought to be the perception that one has regarding oneself. In Psychology, self-image refers to the idea that one holds about the self based on feedback or cues from external sources. These ideas or concepts can include both external factors (like appearance) and internal factors (like abilities).
It is important here to distinguish between self-image and self concept. While self-image is a component of self concept, the latter involves many other factors and is a much broader concept.
Factors Contributing to Self Image
The image we form of ourselves can involve three elements-
- How we perceive ourselves
- How we think others perceive us
- How we want to be perceived (also called the ideal self)
Each of these elements include areas like appearance and skills. So, the way we perceive our physical features are influenced by our own perception, our understanding of others’ perceptions, and our ideal self image.
Our idea of how we should be is largely dependent on social cues. The social expectations that we come across play a vital role in shaping our self-image.
Role Of Social Media On Self Image
The impact of social media on our day-to-day life is not unidentified. But what often gets overlooked is the way it affects our self-image. While most of us might be conscious of the impacts of social platforms and try utilizing them appropriately, we get exposed to norms that govern ideal appearances or living.
Not sure if this applies to you? Think of the item (dress, gadget, etc) that you want to buy. Try identifying the origin of the need to buy it. Do you want to get the item because you need it or because you think you do based on people you see using it?
The product images we see on the Internet are often considered ideal or necessary. Similarly, the models endorsing them become the standard of reference. We start believing that we need to look like them. This can partly be attributed to the Mere Exposure Theory, or the development of positive attitudes towards objects that we are repeatedly exposed to.
The result of these is that we start comparing ourselves with others and try modifying our lives as per our role models. This can lead to anxiety, agitation, dissatisfaction with oneself, restlessness, low mood, and need for validation among others.
How To Combat Social Media Pressure?
One of the best ways to overcome the influence of social media on the formation of self-image is to develop a strong sense of self. Understanding that every person has strengths as well as weaknesses can help you to be easy on yourself.
Along with this, you can try the following techniques:
- Reduce screen time- less exposure would mean less incoming of one-sided information. You can, instead, engage in direct conversations with people and know them without any filters.
- Cultivating positive habits- spending time doing activities you enjoy (other than the social media) can not just help you to feel better, but can also allow you to understand yourself in a better way.
- Surround yourself with positivity- there are many positive roles that social media can play. All you need to do is search for people or content that can enhance your positive feelings about the self.
Last, but not the least, stop looking for approvals or appreciations from people over the Internet. Remember that nobody knows you better than yourself.
